Governor Brown Signs Bill to Fund Monterey County Water Project

September 14, 2016 - Governor Jerry Brown has signed legislation to provide a $10 million grant from the state Department of Water Resources to the Monterey County Water Resources Agency for the purpose of constructing an underground water tunnel connecting the Lake Nacimiento and Lake San Antonio Reservoirs.  Because the two lakes can fill to capacity at vastly different rates, the connecting tunnel ensures a maximum combined storage capacity, and allows for an efficient transfer of water to where it is most needed.

Senate Bill 831 is a follow-up measure to Assembly Bill 155 of 2014, authored by Assembly member Luis Alejo, D-Salinas, and sponsored by the State Building Trades, which provided the Monterey County Water Resources Agency with design-build authority for the project if it entered an agreement with the Monterey County Building and Construction Trades Council.  SB 831 provides funding to begin the construction.

SBCTC President Robbie Hunter commented: “These bills together guarantee that the best-trained, highly-skilled, streamlined work force will build the tunnel to the highest standards while bringing good jobs to local workers, and providing crucial infrastructure to the region that will provide benefits for decades and beyond.”
