$850 Million PLA for San Jose-Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Project

January 3, 2012 - 5,000 Good Jobs on the Way!  Over the objections and misrepresentations of the ABC and Eric Christen, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Agency (VTA) approved, by a 9-1 vote, a PLA for the Fremont to San Jose BART extension.  As expected, the ABC made its usual false claims about the cost and fairness of PLA's.  It didn’t work, as all but one board member saw through their dishonesty.

"It should come as no surprise that the ABC opposes PLAs,” commented Neil Struthers, CEO of the Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building Trades Council to the VTA Board.  "When you represent contractors who statistically are 60 times more likely to commit a wage and hour violation, the last thing you want is more oversight, particularly if that oversight comes from Unions who know all too well what to look for."

In fact, the winning bidder was confident enough to bid a full 10% lower and promise delivery a year quicker than the Agency had estimated.

The $850,000,000 Design/Build rail project funded by both Federal Railway Funds and local tax dollars will put over 5,000 construction workers on the job over the next 5 years.
