$350 Million, Thousands of Construction Jobs
October 26, 2011 - The Pasadena Unified School District Board this week voted 7-0 to approve a project labor agreement with the Los Angeles/Orange County Building Trades Council for $350 million in construction and modernization works. The construction is funded by the district’s Measure TT school bond, which was overwhelmingly approved by district voters in 2008.
The vote was a major victory for the LA/OCBTC, which had battled an anti-PLA campaign by ABC, that board members ultimately concluded was dishonest, and said so as they voted unanimously for the PLA. Board members also commented on shoddy workmanship and cost overruns on previous non-PLA projects, and commended the Building Trades for including local hire provisions, which members described as crucial to the local economy.
The PLA means thousands of good jobs for Building Trades workers in the Pasadena area. Congratulations to Executive Director Robbie Hunter and to all the area’s Building Trades workers who presented the facts about the savings from PLAs, resulting in the school board doing the right thing for workers, students and taxpayers alike.
