Republicans Attack Federal Prevailing Wages
July 22, 2003 - Republicans in the U.S. Congress have introduced a bill to repeal the federal Davis-Bacon Act, effectively destroying prevailing wage requirements, sponsored by House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX).
They have also blocked votes on the Water Quality Financing Act, the Railroad Track Modernization Act and the Rail Infrastructure Development and Expansion Act for the 21st Century in an attempt to get rid of prevailing wages.
These three acts would generate more then three million new jobs. For California alone, the Water Act would produce 67,000 new jobs and put $1.4 billion into the state's economy.
SBCTC affiliates are urged to contact their Members of Congress, both Republican and Democrat, to oppose this action by the Bush Administration.
