Building Trades Coordinator Quoted in
Magazine Story on Hearing Loss Prevention

Laura Boatman, Project Coordinator for the State Building Trades, was recently quoted in an article in the July 2010 issue of the magazine "Safety + Health," entitled "Noise Barrier, Preventing Hearing Loss Among Construction Workers."

The article quotes Boatman relating an incident that occurred during a project training session on hearing loss, at which a wristwatch alarm interrupted the proceedings, but no one seemed to notice. "We looked around and nobody was turning it off," Boatman is quoted. "We realized that nobody else in the classroom could hear it."

Boatman goes on to state that she has learned from workers that education along with protection is necessary to prevent their hearing loss. "What I heard back from the group is usually the employers will hand out some sort of hearing protection or they'll have that available at the jobsite, but unless you have that coupled with some effective training, it really doesn't mean much."

The magazine is published by the National Safety Council, a nonprofit, nongovernmental public service organization that describes its mission as providing information and education to promote health and safety in the workplace and elsewhere. Its members include more than 50,000 businesses, labor organizations, schools, public agencies, private group, and individuals.
