SBCTC Victory for Apprenticeship!

Assembly Special Session Bill AB8X proposed to slash millions in programs throughout state government. A cut of $2 million was proposed to reduce apprenticeship funds by almost 15%. State Building and Construction Trades (SBCTC) President Bob Balgenorth, SBCTC Lobbyist Jay Hansen and former SBCTC lobbyist Scott Wetch battled these cuts in the assembly this week.

The final cut from the apprenticeship money was $233,000, less then 2% of the total $13 million allotted for apprenticeship.

Dillingham Construction Files Bankruptcy!

In a sign of the soft economy, Dillingham Construction Holding Company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on January 28, 2003. Founded in 1888, Dillingham was one of the oldest union construction companies in California. Their presence in the state's construction will be missed.

Most of the company will be reorganized in Florida. Current California projects were sold to Roel Construction in San Diego. While Roel will continue nearly $92 million in Dillingham projects, the company does not have a solid relationship with construction and trade unions.
